Yoruba (Nigeria)Dance Staff, Crowned Male Figure
Yoruba (Nigeria)
Dance Staff, Crowned Male Figure
Wood, traces of pigment
Height: 27 ¼ inches Width: 4 ¾ inches Depth: 4 inches

This unusually massive dance staff does not have the obvious iconographic markers found on most similar objects. Its contextual importance, however, is signaled by its massive size and scale, the crown worn by the kneeling bearded male, and by the spears he carries. The iconographic references could point in either of two devotional directions: Eshu-Elegba the Trickster or Shango the Thundergod. Both are deities who embody forcefulness and high levels of energy.
There is an old vertical crack system, primarily on the proper left side, as well as repatinated old losses of elements once attached at the back center of the headdress and the center of the back. There is a loosened plug at the front center of the hairdress and a minor loss on the proper right spear.

Provenance: Serge Schoffel, Belgium
Alain Schoffel, Paris

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
