Yoruba (Nigeria), Armlet, Copper alloy
Yoruba (Nigeria)
Armlet
Copper alloy
Height: 5 ½ inches Dia.: 4 ½ inches

This hollow cylindrical armlet has flanges at either end and is decorated with two sets of two motifs, one a central head in high relief from the chin of which issues a looping chain-like design connected on either side to another slightly smaller head. The other, more abstract motif features what appears to be a fluted container out of which issues two looping cords in relief, ending on either side with a three-lobed bell-like device. Near the container in the latter motif is a low relief design with two circles attached to the ends of a "W". This appears to be an armlet associated with the Ogboni/Oshugbo cult, a leadership institution in most Yoruba city-states.

There are some minor metal losses in several places and a small area of the flange is bent.

Provenance: H.
