Yoruba, Igbomina (Nigeria)Female Shrine Figure
Yoruba, Igbomina (Nigeria)
Female Shrine Figure
Wood, camwood, indigo, traces of pigment
Height: 32 ½ inches Width: 8 ½ inches Depth: 9 inches

This commanding figure projects its presence outward into surrounding space. Its scale and quality indicate that it represented a major devotee or priestess of an important shrine. This importance is reinforced by the lavish use of indigo on the coiffure. It is by the same hand, distinguished by the diamond-faceted eye treatment, who did a published Shango pedestal. (William Fagg, John Pemberton 3rd, Bryce Holcombe, ed. Yoruba Sculpture of West Africa. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1982, plate 46.) The base and feet have considerable insect loss resulting from contact with the earthen shrine floor and there is an old crack system down the back center of the figure, along with a few other small vertical cracks, none of which affects the powerful impact of the figure.

Provenance: Michael J.
