<B>Yoruba (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Divination Cup supported by an Equestrian Figure, <I>agere ifa</B></I><BR>Wood<BR>Height: 10 ½ inches Width: 5 7/8 inches Depth: 7 inches<BR><BR>Warriors or hunters riding horses are common themes for divination cups, with the bowl itself being supported on the head of the rider. The rider holds reins in his left hand and a spear in the right. His feet are carved as if in stirrups. The horse is simplified and proportionately small in relation to its rider, whose head is enlarged. Three horizontal scars adorn the rider's cheeks. There is an indigenously repaired break on the proper right forearm.<BR><BR>Sixteen sacred palm nuts, which hold the secrets accessed during divination, must be present at every divining ritual, and they are stored in cups such as this one.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
