Yoruba 4 Figures Ibeji
Yoruba (Nigeria)
Four Ibeji Figures
Wood, metal, camwood, indigo and laundry bluing, beads
Height: 10 ½ inches Width: 2 ¾ inches Depth: 2 ¾ inches

Although the sizes, faces, and bodies of these four figures are essentially “identical”, there are also differences that lead to caution in stating that these memorial images represent a rare occurrence of quadruplets. Two bases have plain vertical edges, one has diagonal striations, and one has cross-hatching. The figure with cross-hatched base has a strand of beads at the neck and a waist band of small leather disks. The figure with the diagonally-striated base has a waist band of small leather disks. Three of the four figures have metal-inserted eye pupils; the fourth shows where these were formerly inserted. One figure is missing its proper left ear, and the diagonally-striated base has lost a small segment at proper left front.

Provenance: Gary Hendershott, Little Rock
Greg LaChapelle, Santa Fe

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)

Important n
