Called <I>tutukipfula,</B></I> these flasks carried the gunpowder essential in the use of muzzle-loading rifles, which continued in use in more remote areas until late in the twentieth century. As items of male pride, the fine elaboration of surface decoration was greatly valued. About this example, H. Bruce Green writes: "When I was in this area in1971-1972, although I did see some muzzle-loading weapons, powder flasks were the exception as most men had a cartridge-type rifle. This one belonged to an old man who stated it had belonged to his uncle. Now that he had a 'new" rifle (early 1900s from W.W.I, I think) he was willing to part with it for some tobacco and a few coins."<BR>A small piece is missing from one cord flange on the cap.
