Yellowstone National Park Stereoview Set 1894-1904
Presented in this lot is a Rare, Original "Yellowstone National Park Stereoview Set" by Underwood & Underwood, 1894-1904. Box is titled, "Yellowstone National Park Our Pilgrimage To California 1904", these 30 stereoscopic silver gel photographs are mounted on stiff 3-1/2" x 7" gray cards in black slipcase. The photos take the viewer on a trip by rail and horse-drawn carriage through the park beginning at the north entrance in Gardiner, Montana. Each card has a short caption description on the face. Includes shots of the park's iconic wildlife (grizzly bear and bison) and places (Mammoth Terraces, Norris Geyser Basin, Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone). Highlights include photos of tourists enjoying the thermal features in a manner forbidden today, including one man with a small trout on the end of his line turning from Yellowstone Lake to a small geyser, where he apparently intends to cook the fish. Six of the cards have a short description on the verso, with more details on the recto, and captions translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Cyrillic. Two of the cards are of Mt. Shasta and Pike's Peak Railway respectively, and one card is in hand-tinted colour. The cards are in amazingly good condition, no marring noted. The black cloth bound silver gilt slip case has scuffing, title labels appear added at some time after publishing, most likely from the Underwood & Underwood set, "Our Pilgrimage to California 1904", measures 3.5"W x 7.5"L x 4.5"H
