Yellowstone National Park. Photogravures
Yellowstone National Park. Photogravures from Nature, Photographed and Published by F. Jay Haynes. (Photo-Gravure Co.: New York, 1887), first edition, Title page, Contents Page, plus 25 sepia-toned plates with protective tissue, beige decorative cloth binding with gilt and red lettering and a mounted sepia plate on front board, floral endpapers, oblong folio (14.25" x 11"). Haynes was the official photographer for both the Northern Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone National Park, given the latter honor by the Department of the Interior in 1884 following his stint as official photographer for President Arthur's excursion party through the park the year before. He also took the famous picture of the horse Comanche, the sole survivor from Custer's Last Stand. Yellowstone National Park. Photogravures from Nature gathers the best of Haynes' early photographs of the landmarks within Yellowstone, and is a wonderful collection of images from the period just following the opening of Yellowstone as the world's first national park in 1872. An interesting aspect of this copy of Haynes' photographs is the previous owner's card affixed to the front pastedown. The handwritten card reads "Compliments of Chas. S. Fee General Passenger and Ticket Agent Northern Pacific R. R. St. Paul, Minn." This is interesting because Haynes was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, and had use of his own renovated Pullman boxcar as a traveling studio. It is possible, though unlikely, that Haynes perused this very copy of his Yellowstone photographs as he steamed toward his next destination as an employee of the Northern Pacific. The copy presented here is in about good condition, with noticeable edge and spine wear present, as well as bumped and rubbed corners. Both the head and tail of the spine show mild chipping, and the boards display wear and moderate soiling, especially for a popular book of this vintage. The interior textblock is sound, though a bit shaken at the rear, where the rear free endpaper has been torn out. The front free endpaper has been folded, and there is a 1.75" tear to one of the plates, not affecting the image. Most pages show some foxing, and most images show minor offsetting to the adjacent tissue. Still, all plates are present, with bold and clear images remaining. Haynes' stunning collection of Yellowstone photographs is rare in any condition, and scarce with all plates and all protective tissues intact.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
