The Gold Hill mine was made famous by the underground fire that started on April 7, 1869 on the 800 foot level. Since the shifts were changing the casualties were smaller, but at least 35 men still perished. The fire also became a political football in the 1872 Senate race between William Sharon and John P. Jones, who had been superintendent of the mine at the time of the fire. Sharon accused Jones of starting the fire for stock manipulation. Sharon's accusation cost him the race. According to EMJ Vol 64, in 1897 the Yellow Jacket had just repaired the engine in the main shaft, and all previous officers had been reelected for the 1897 year.
