Yaure (?) (Côte d'Ivoire)Portrait Mask Wood,
Yaure (?) (Côte d'Ivoire)
Portrait Mask
Wood, pigment
Height: 15 inches Width: 5 5/8 inches Depth: 4 ¼ inches

A number of elegant, attenuated masks probably made in the mid-twentieth century are difficult to place culturally. A comparison to this example which shares the attenuated quality the hairline pattern, and the delicately worked eyebrows, is a portrait mask reproduced in Baule, African Art Western Eyes. About the pictured mask, Susan Vogel says: “The mask opposite has a feature often seen on sculptures from the non-Baule Yaure who live to the west: patterned eyebrows - a more reliable marker of Yaure style than the triangular decoration along the cheeks that the Yaure and the Baule share” (Susan Mullin Vogel. Baule. African Art Western Eyes. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1997, pp. 164-165). In addition to an old fine vertical crack system there is minor erosion on the coiffure of the triple heads and chipping on the two proper right triangular flanges just below the ear.

Provenance: H.
