Yarrowstalks #1 (Brian Zahn, 1967) Condition: FN. This impossibly rare hippie newspaper tabloid features the very first printed appearance of one of the most popular of all Underground Comix characters -- Mr. Natural. Published in Philadelphia in May, 1967, this is where Robert Crumb broke away from his conventional work for the American Greeting Company, and "did his own thing." Within a short time, Robert would experience LSD and hightail it to San Francisco to produce the key that started the whole magilla called Underground Comix, a little item called Zap. This first issue of Yarrowstalks contains three more Crumb strips in addition to "Mr. Natural, the Zen Master", plus news of the city's rock scene, including a picture of Todd Rundgren's early band, Woody's Truck Stop. This must-have, under-valued item rarely ever turns up; in fact, it's the first copy to make its way into a Heritage sale. It has been lightly folded, and looks very nice, but there is some minor bug-chew damage on the back cover. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide FN 6.0 value = $60.
