Yanzi (Democratic Republic of Congo)
Female Figure
Wood
Height: 9 1/2inches Width: 2 1/2 inches Depth: 2 3/8 inches

Little has been published about the Yanzi, whose figural sculpture, when seen, shows resemblances to several neighboring groups. The parallel oblique line cheek scarifications resemble closely those found on Teke figures. In this example, the eyes suggest kinship with Lula, or some Yaka, examples. This figure was collected on the lower Kwilu River by H. Bruce Greene while traveling with Joseph Cornet east to southeast of the Teke area. There is a vertical crack system on the proper left from the top of the head to the forearm. Another vertical crack system runs down the lower back and buttocks at the center of the body. There is extensive insect loss in the proper right leg, some at the proper right elbow, and at the fronts of both feet. There is a chip off the proper right breast, and the proper right leg was broken off and reglued.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples Florida

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
