This is a circa 1870-1880 variation of the gunstock and knife blade war club with a single three inch long iron spike inset into the haft and attributed to the Yanktonai Sioux Native American Indians in Eastern South Dakota. The hardwood haft measures 36 inches long overall and is adorned with extensive hot file branding, brass trade tacks, and various circular pierced hole designs along the top. The war club is from the Ben Thompson well respected and renowned Midwest collection. The war club / war axe tomahawk has a nice, thick patina and graceful styling. The piece truly has an “art in the weapon” appearance. A similar example of a Plains War Club with single spike protrusion can be seen in “Indian War Clubs of the American Frontier” by John Baldwin 2008 as shown in the attached photo; as well as another example in the Cowan’s American Indian Art sale September 23, 2017 Lot Number 149 with a start bid of $2,500 and estimate of $5,000 to $7,000. Our company also listed a similar example in our 6/18/2016 sale at lot number 184, attributed to Chief John Sampson and estimated at $2,000 to $6,500. The piece is truly in fine well-preserved museum quality condition and displays very well. Attached is a picture of the mentioned page from Baldwin’s book and the Cowan’s auction example.
