<B>Yaka (Democratic Republic of Congo)</B></I><BR>Divination Figure<BR>Wood, kaolin<BR>Height: 8 7/8 inches Width: 1 7/8 inches Depth: 2 inches<BR><BR>These smaller divination implements in the form of slit-drums were used for the preparation of healing or empowering substances. In the open area of the present example there is a heavy residue of kaolin, a natural fine white clay which played a central role in magical and spiritual activities, both as an activator and as a metaphor for varied aspects of the spirit world. There are chips out of the lower front center, as well as a crack at the front upper proper left, passing from the receptacle into the neck.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
