Author of such notable works as My Country and My People (1935) and Confucius Saw Nancy and Essays About Nothing (1936). A fine collection of five A.L.S's, four A.N.S.'s three T.L.S.'s (as well as two others written by his wife and also signed by Yutang, as well as five of his books signed and inscribed on the front flyleaves. Also included are various cut flyleaves bearing his signature and several notes in his hand. The correspondence is to a couple in New York and ranges from 1963 to 1975, giving glimpses in to the later and apparently unhappy years of Yutang's life. They read in part: "É[Nov. 26, 1967]...I am deeply immersed in the compilation of the Chinese-English dictionary - something I am trying to finish in three years though it should normally take at least five...[Sept. 28, 1966]...Hong and I have decided to make Taipei our home base...We really prefer Taiwan to Hong Kong, because everyone here speaks our home town dialect...I keep thinking of them as the people I knew in my old village, suddenly transformed into an extremely literate, well-dressed and healthy population...[Feb 28, 1968]...I want to introduce you to a Chinese movie director, Mr. Hu Chinchuan, of Taipei who has produced an extraordinary film called DRAGON INN...[Apr. 8, 1973]...Today we receive notice from McGraw-Hill bout the sending of the Dictionary...I'm planning to launch my translation of Red Chamber Dream...". The books include signed English copies of My Country and My People, Confucius Saw Nancy and Essays About Nothing, Letter of a Chinese Amazon and War-Time Essays, The Little Critic: Essays, Satires and Sketches on China (two books which comprise the first and second series of essays). Books bear various defects including board separation and dampstains. Letters bear various marginal tears and looses, though overall quite clean and perfectly legible. A great literary collection. $500-700
