Ink and watercolor on paper, hanging scroll. Featuring landscape scene of figures and trees. Signed and attr. Yun Shouping (Chinese 1633-1690). 100 x 54 cm. Yun Shouping was a Chinese painter and calligrapher during the early part of the Qing dynasty. Yun is credited with popularizing flower painting, which he executed in the 11th-century painter Xu Xi’s mogu (boneless) manner, a method that emphasized building forms with washes instead of outlines. Born in 1633 in Piling, China, he spent his young adulthood traveling the country. Over the course of his career, he incorporated more influences, including the styles of Dong Qichang and Wang Hui, in his depictions of peonies, poppies, and amaranths. He went on to become a founder of the Ch’ang-chou school of painting. Yun died in 1690 in China. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the National Palace Museum in Taipei, among others.
