An important design only made for export, the Kendi is based upon Islamic models. This early form is well-pictured on page 108 of "DEHUA WARES" 1990, published by the Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong. Many later stylistic variations were made to this form, but here we have a formative example in perfect condition. Shallow raised decoration covers the entire body, extending below the glaze down to the edge of the base, which is flat. 6-1/8" across and 4-1/8" tall, it has light fritting on the everted rim and three small glaze breaks - one at the rim and two down below on the inner surface, with no chips or cracks. Surely one of the finest in existence, it comes from an old Manila collection formed in the 1960s and 1970s and is reported to have been excavated in Laguna, Luzon.
