YOUNG ( John Radford ). The analysis and solution of cubic and biquadratic equations ; forming a sequel to the Elements of AIgebra, and an introduction to the Theory and Solution of Equations of the higher orders. Souter and Law, 1842FIRST EDITION, pages xx, 247, small 8vo, original cloth : a little dusty, a little worn, with some light fingering, but a good, sound copy of a scarce book.Young (1799-1842), a largely self-taught mathematician, was appointed professor of mathematics at Belfast College in 1833. In 1849, on the opening of Queen's College, the Presbyterian party which controlled the professorial nominations prevented his reappointment as professor in the new establishment. This sectarian rebuff spurred him on to increased mathematical research including finishing his proof of Newton's rule for determining the number of imaginary roots in an equation. During his career in mathematics he made several important discoveries, published almost twenty books and contributed a number of papers to the RIA and other scholarly journals. This work is not noted in the list of titles ascribed to him in the DNB : NSTC notes five copies - C, Dt, O, E and LC - COPAC adds UCL .ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) CREMONA ( Luigi ). Graphical Statics. Known particularly for his work in projective geometry and graphical statics, he availed of this first English edition of his most important work to make some revisions and has added a new preface to each of the two treatises. (2) PARKES ( Samuel ). The Chemical Catechism, with tables, notes, illustrations, and experiments. The tenth edition, carefully corrected, and adapted to the present state of chemical science ; with an enlarged dictionary of terms, and a very copious and newly arranged index.
