YELLOW DIAMOND CRYSTAL GROUP
YELLOW DIAMOND CRYSTAL GROUP
Bakwanga, Kasai, Democratic Republic of Congo
"Fancy" diamonds, of which this specimen is an example, are notable for their comparative rarity. If they are 'clean' enough then they are destined for high-end jewelry at astronomical prices. This group of octahedral crystals was acquired by Gilbert Gautier; a French mining engineer working in what was then the Belgian Congo. The deep yellow color serves as a foil to heighten the adamantine, almost metallic luster of this unusual specimen. The color is so deep that it is not apparent until the stone is back-lit. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the few places on the planet that is probably more dangerous now than when this piece was first acquired. The group measures ¾ x 5/8 x 5/16 inches thick. It is complete and in fine condition. It weighs 25.24 carats.
