This elegant composition of fresh snow on Union Square was made from Kuniyoshi's studio window. The Japanese-born artist came to America as a young man in 1906 and worked as an itinerant laborer on the West coast. He soon moved to New York and studied at the Art Student's League. Kuniyoshi's paintings, prints, and drawings reveal his interest in Surrealism, as well as a blend of western and Japanese art influences. During the 1930s, he turned to photography to supplement his income while also teaching at the Art Students League and the New School for Social Research. In 1948, the Whitney Museum of American Art selected Kuniyoshi for their first one-man retrospective.
