Xavier Martinez (1869-1943).
A grouping consisting of Xavier Martinez's charcoal box, drawing instruments, and a small sketchbook. MARTINEZ, XAVIER. 1869-1943. 1.) Leather sketchbook with Martinez's signature on paste-down, dated April 1916. 7 1/4in x 4 7/16in. There are at least 40+ sketches, including charcoal, pencil, pastels/chalks; some appear to be plans/layout sketches for paintings or other works, and several showing figures and landscapes that look to be based on his Arizona trip (1913 or a later visit). There are also doodles of his monogram designs, and sketches dated 1917 and 1920. Condition: The book is in fair condition, with scratches/losses, spine loose; there is some toning, but overall the individual sketches are in good condition. 2.) Drawing tools, identified on an envelope in Elsie Whitaker Martinez's hand: "Marty drawing Instruments". Consists of two reed pencil/charcoal holders, one with stubs of each; two metal drawing tools, once marked Made in Germany; a Farber metal pencil holder with pencil stub; a Wahl Eversharp silver-plated mechanical pencil; and a charcoal brush. 3.) A hinged lid wood drawing box, with Xavier Martinez's "X" monogram painted on the lid; 6 5/8in x 8 3/4in x 2 1/4in. The box contains numerous pencil, charcoal, and chalk stubs, several smudging tools, a brush, and chamois cloths. Condition: The box with use wear/scratches, one hinge is detached.
