A sketch for a mural with an associated photograph and news clipping, together with another sketch. Artist: Xavier Martinez (1869-1943). Title/Description: "Portola - 1769 - Friar Miguel Costanso"; and another sketch of a friar (2 works). Signature: One signed with monogram bottom center, the other with monogram lower right. Date Created: 1930. Medium/Ground: Charcoal/Conte crayon on paper. Size: 18 3/4in x 11 3/4in; 15 1/4in x 8in (formed of two pieces of paper). Condition: The mural sketch is overall good; laid down on cardboard. The second sketch with edge tears/creases. Together with a photograph of Xavier Martinez at work on the mural (7 3/8in x 7 1/4in); and a 1931 news clipping describing the mural being painted on the outside of his friend and neighbor's (Frederick Bogle) house, across from his studio in Piedmont: "Because that niche in the wall was so tempting. It seemed to call to me to adorn it with some fitting scene, in keeping with the superb view from our hills".
