Medium/Ground: Pencil on paper. Size: 17 3/8in x 22in. Condition: Laid down on cardboard; foxing. Martinez arrived in San Francisco in 1893 and enrolled in the San Francisco School of Design/Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (SFAI), where he received the school's Avery Golden Medal for painting, and an honorable mention for drawing. He graduated in 1897 and went on to study in Paris (1895-1901), where he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Atelier Gerome (Jean-Leon Gerome, 1824-1904), and the Academy of Eugene Carriere (1849-1906).
