Size: 8 1/8in x 10in; 9 3/4in x 11 7/8in (frame). Condition good. Rosalia LaBastida de Coney (1844-1897) was an aristocratic woman and wife of American Alexander K. Coney (1847-1930), Consul-General of Mexico. She became Xavier Martinez's foster mother after the death of his own mother when he was 17. They had a close and affectionate relationship, as indicated by her letters to him, his paintings, and the numerous photographs of her that he saved with his papers. Rosalia brought him to San Francisco where she arranged for and advocated for him in his early art education, and encouraged his further studies in Europe.
