Artist: Xavier Martinez (1869-1943). Title/Description: After Diego Velazquez (1599-1660), Portrait of the Infanta Marguerite in bust. Signature: Unsigned. Date Created: 1897-1901. Material/Ground: Oil on canvas. Size: 20in x 16in.  Condition: Craquelure; scattered paint drips. With Oakland Museum label verso, exhibited in the 1974 Xavier Martinez retrospective. In her oral history, San Francisco Bay Area Writers and Artists (Bancroft Library, 1962-1969:66), Elsie Whitaker Martinez relates an anecdote of Martinez being in the Louvre copying a Velazquez painting, and James A. McNeill Whistler was passing by, stopped, and said: '"You have great talent, young man', and walked off". In 1897 Xavier Martinez entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Atelier Gerome (Jean-Leon Gerome, 1824-1904), and in 1900 the Academy of Eugene Carriere (1849-1906).
