1p, 5.5" x 9" on First National Bank of Cheyenne, WY letterhead, 25 July 1880. Recording sale of 30 horses to William Smith.

John Sparks (1843-1908) was born in Mississippi into a family which made a fortune developing the frontier, moving to one area to establish a ranch, selling it as the area got "crowded," and moving on to the next "frontier." Sparks' family moved from Mississippi through Arkansas into Texas, Wyoming and Nevada. His wealth increased rapidly until the winter of 1889-1890, which was extremely harsh. Sparks later estimated that his herd of 45,000 was reduced to 15,000. His partner, John Tinnin, sold out the following year, and by 1901, Sparks sold his remaining interest as well. He then entered politics, losing his bid for the Senate, he was elected Governor of Nevada in 1902. He won re-election, but died before the end of his second term.
