The lot features a fine old Northern Plains beaded sheath and trade knife set collected from the Arapaho Native American Indians of Eastern Wyoming and dating to the 19th Century. The sheath shows an Indian tanned hide construction that is covered in fantastic 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads in a geometric pattern. The beadwork shows a chalk white background with patterns in red white heart, Cheyenne pink, medium green, medium blue and having a fancy beaded edge border in Cheyenne pink. The sheath still shows the original tie strap at the top along with three drop fringes of Indian tanned hide which are adorned with old rolled tin jingle cones. The trade knife also shows an early age with large blade, having a riveted metal bolster and wooden handle that is covered in Prairie Rattlesnake skin and accented by brass trade tacks in an artful pattern. The set is said to date to circa 1870-1880 and displays very well. Provenance: From the respected Wyoming collection of Ted and Lilly Jarvis and the sheath was pictured in the 2009 book “Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” by Mark Francis on page 15, figure 15. Together the set is pictured in the 2019 release, “Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 2”. Overall the set shows well preserved condition with some wear from age and very slight bead loss. The sheath measures 10 ¼”L by 3”W. The knife measures 12”L.
