Bronze figure of a cowboy on horseback, the Wrangler, given by the Cowboy Hall of Fame (now called the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum) to outstanding film, TV and books celebrating the tradition of Western lore. Beginning in 1961, the award survives to this day. Most of the recipients for the first 10 years are now considered legends as John Wayne, John Ford, Lee Marvin, and Marlon Brando were among these. This figure, sculpted by John Free, was used from 1961 to 1969, when they revised it. It was once mounted on a wood base, now missing, that would have held the identification plaque, thus the winner is unknown. It may have happened in a fall, as the horse's front left leg has an ankle crack. Still, an extremely rare offering as they gave but a few each year. Mounted on a marble plinth. The award itself measures 7˝ x 5.5˝.
