Wrangel was built as Russian fort in 1834 to supply fur traders, and was initially called Redoubt St. Dionysius. In 1868 Americans rebuilt the fort and named it in honor of Baron Ferdinand Von Wrangel, who was the first governor/general of Russian America from 1830-1835. In 1902 the Post Office shortened the name of Fort Wrangel and changed the spelling to Wrangell, as it is known today. [Ref: usgennet.org/usa/ak/state/ftwrangel.html]. A group of businessmen from Chicago began the company in 1905 and publicly sold the stock. The only known members of the company, apart from the president and secretary listed above, are vice president P.A. Lewald, and treasurer Harry F. Parsons.
