Wow Comics #1 (Henle, 1936) Condition: Apparent FN/VF.
Wow Comics #1 (Henle, 1936) Condition: Apparent FN/VF. The first comic book work of Will Eisner is a milestone in any comic fan's book! Yet this item is more than that, it's also the first comic produced by S. M. "Jerry" Iger. Soon after being hired to produce Wow What A Magazine, as this first issue was called, Iger placed an ad in the New York Times looking for cartoonists to work on. Eisner was among the applicants. To make a long story short, soon the Eisner-Iger "shop" was born, and if you want to see the tremendous role both men played in the Golden Age, flip to almost any page in this catalog! Other big names contributing here were Dick Briefer (who drew the cover) and Bernard Baily, who did a page with portraits of Shirley Temple and Fred Astaire. This magazine-sized (8 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches) pre-Golden Age publication is almost impossible to find (Gerber rightly gave it a scarcity rating of 8). The interior is black and white, featuring text interspersed with comics throughout. This copy has a couple of tear seals on the outside edge of the front cover. Quite an artifact indeed! Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $289; VG 4.0 value = $578; FN 6.0 value = $867; VF 8.0 value = $1,806.From the John McLaughlin Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.5% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auction Galleries. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Auction Galleries, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
