Gelle

This large marble sculpture depicts a scene in which a wounded soldier, his sword lying by his side, is flanked by two good Samaritans: one, a cloaked gentleman in buttoned boots, and the other, a nun, wiping the soldier's brow with her handkerchief.

Jules Gelle, a painter and sculptor born in Anzin, was well-known for his bronze and marble sculptures of military figures. His ability to describe fine detail--such as the particulars of the soldier's uniform, his goatee and moustache--brought him success in Paris. He studied at the Écôle des Beaux-Arts in Valencienne, not incidentally a garrison town, and exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1868 to 1880.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
