Lot of 7 different spoons: 1) Expo 1970, showing Atlas holding a world globe over his head on the handle, and Osaka engraved in the bowl. Back is marked Made in Holland. 2) Spokane Expo 1974. Ceramic inlay. Marked Japan. 3) Hemis-Fair, San Antonio World’s Fair, 1968 with Tower of the Americas on the handle. Marked Made in Holland. 4) New York World’s Fair, 1964, showing the Vatican Pavilion. Marked Th. Martinsen Sterling, Norway. 5) New York World’s Fair, 1964-65, with world globe on top. Marked Oneida Silversmiths. 6) Battle of Manila, 1898, Flagship Olympia are pictured in the bowl, and Commodore George Dewey is pictured on the handle. Marked Standard. 7) Another Dewey spoon, this one also shows the Flagship Olympia in the bowl, and Dewey “Our Hero” on the handle. Reverse shows Dewey Loving Cup. No markings.

George Dewey (1837-1917) was the only U.S. Navy officer to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Proceeding always upward in his career, he was given command of the USS Olympia on January 3, 1898, Captain Charles V. Gridley, commanding. From this historic Spanish-American War encounter at Manila, Philippine Islands in May of that year came the now-famous expression, “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley.” The Battle of Manila decimated the Spanish fleet and installations in the harbor without any losses to the United States fleet [Ref:
