This is an example of a Winchester Model 1897 Trench Gun that was manufactured in 1942. The shotgun has the take-down frame, low comb stock and four-hole hand guard/bayonet lug that are characteristic of most WWII M1897 Trench Guns. The receiver, barrel, magazine tube and hand guard have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The stock is fitted with a black, checkered, hard rubber buttplate with the Winchester logo in a circle. The lower left side of the receiver is roll stamped with "U.S." followed by the Ordnance 'Shell and Flame' insignia. The 'Shell and Flame' insignia is also stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection parks that consist of the initials "G.H.D." in a rectangle above a small (1/4-inch) Ordnance Corps escutcheon. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester two-line address and patent markings followed by: "-MODEL 97-WINCHESTER - 12 GA / - TRADE MARK - " and "2 3/4 CHAM./CYL". The date of manufacture "42" (1942) is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The serial number; "955686" is roll-stamped on the under side of the barrel take-down mount and "E/955686" is stamped on the lower portion of the barrel. Oval Winchester "W?P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The hand guard/bayonet lug is not marked. A rack number, "45" is stamped on the bottom of the stock pistol grip. The Trench Gun is complete with a 1918 dated M1907 russet leather sling.
