World War II Photo Album
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
World War II photo album giving a distinctive perception of the war in Europe through the eyes of American Corporal Howard R. Dow. The album begins with Time magazine and newspaper cutouts of generals leading American troops, along with cards of Soviet and French military leaders. An interesting pamphlet tells the story of the Corps of Engineers. There are photos of various English cities beginning with Wattisham, England, the site of a major airfield, and photos of a bomber plane in the fields of Hardwick, operational machinery in Seething, a 1944 London parade, the Bristol Cathedral and a number of photos of Dow's fellow soldiers in action. Photos of the D-Day invasion show the Normandy coast as soldiers sail toward the beaches, and digging soil on the beachhead, along with a shot of tanks rumbling. There is a haunting photo of rubble, a print of Corporal Dow washing his clothes in a creek and a shot of an officer cleaning his gun. There are photos of English officers interacting and a grand shot of a British Panzer tank. The corporal included a photographic account of the Battle of Carentan, showing debris from bombed buildings and an army truck driving on a dirt pavement through the demolished city. The vivid destruction stands out in numerous photos, especially in Rennes, where three Nazi airplanes destroyed the city. The most fascinating photos in the album are the remains of a downed Nazi plane with the swastika, along with photos of Nazi prisoners of war, including one of a dead officer on the ground. Total number of pictures is 773. The album measures 10'' x 7.75'' and the front cover is detached and chipped. There are loose pages and pictures, but the photos are generally in very good condition.
