Estimate: $3500 - 5500
Manufacturer: Mauser Model: P08
This is an example of 1940 dated, "42" code Mauser P.08 Luger pistol with the Navy marked front grip strap. The front grip strap is marked "O/3868", which according to Axis by Jan Still, is in the range of the Navy property numbers assigned to the 1934 Mauser Pocket pistols. The marking though appears to match other known markings and could be an anomoly. (Purchaser will have to make their own determination!) This specific pistol has the all blue metal finish with checkered walnut grips. The chamber area is dated "1940" with the wartime "42"code marking on the front toggle. The right side of the barrel extension has the double "Eagle/655" Waffenamt proofs next to the single eagle firing proof, which is also present on the right side of the barrel. The underside of the barrel is also marked with the bore diameter "8,83", along with the serial number of the pistol. Safety and extractor are correctly marked "GESICHERT" and "GELADEN" respectively. It is currently fitted with a later type three all blue magazine with an aluminum base that is stamped "3714/a/Eagle/655" with no other proofs. The grips are nicely checkered walnut that are marked on the back sides with the number "14". This Luger is complete with an original 1939 dated Navy issue leather holster. The back side is marked "VOEGEL/KOLN/1939/Eagle/WaA387/Eagle M". These early Navy issue Lugers are scarce as the Navy just didn't require nearly as many as the German Army and it is estimated that no more than 8000-10000 were actually procured for their use throughout the war.
BBL: 3 7/8 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 3714a
Condition:
Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish overall, with wear on the edges and high spots with some minor thinning on the grip straps. The grips are very fine overall with minor wear across the checkering mixed with some handling marks and nicks. The holster is also very fine plus with very good black color overall with tight stitching and clear distinct markings on the back. It just shows some minor wear and scuffing on the front edge of the flap, lower area of the magazine pouch and toe area. This desirable Luger has all matching numbers to include the one magazine. A very nice complete German Navy marked Luger pistol rig.
