This is a very nice example of an early production WWII Japanese Type 99 sniper as produced at the Toriimatsu factory under the Nagoya Arsenal. The Type 99 series rifles was developed in 1941 and actually fielded in 1942 and was the primary WWII sniper used by the Japanese Army and Marines throughout the war. They were shorter and handier than the Type 97 and fired the heavier 7.7mm cartridge. This rifle is marked on the rear bridge with the Nagoya Arsenal symbol over the serial number (2880). The front receiver ring has a partial chrysanthemum (which was restamped) over the Kana markings for "99/Type". The rifle has the original WWII matching Japanese sniper bolt, with matching extractor, firing pin and cocking knob. The front barrel band is also matching to the rifle. It has the later rear sight that is graduated from 2-15 (200-1500 meters) that correctly lacks the anti-aircraft wings, with the inverted "v" front sight with guards. It has the original stock and handguard that has a cupped sheet metal buttplate with no drain holes in front of the triggerguard. The underside of the stock has two Toriimatsu factory proof/acceptance marks. The left side of the receiver is fitted with it's original WWII Japanese scope base and is mounted with an original, WWII internally adjustable 4x sniper scope. The scope is marked on the objective end with "4X7/star with a circle inside/No. 6494" and the mount has Japanese Kana markings and it is fitted with an original rubber eye piece. The locking plate on the back side is stamped 1260. It has the original Japanese Sniper reticle inside that has the elevation graduations from 1-14 (100-1400 meters) with the 20 degrees deflection for left and right adjustments. This rifle is complete with a late war, all blued Type 30 bayonet and scabbard, made by the Toyada factory.

Stock: hardwood
Gauge: 7.7 mm Japanese
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 2880
Condition:
Partially refinished with traces of the original blue finish remaining mixed with patches of cold blue touch up. The mum has been crudely re-engraved with no regard to accuracy. The refinished stock is in very good condition with a matching original handguard, and both has been lightly cleaned but not sanded, as it still shows proof marks on the under side of the stock. The scope is in excellent condition with 95% of the wartime black painted finish overall with clear sharp optics and no specs inside. As noted above this rifle has matching parts.
