World War II Japanese Flag and Photograph Group.
World War II Japanese Flag and Photograph Group. This lot holds five flags (4 Japanese and 1 American), thirteen photographs, 1 cotton bag with Japanese characters, and five paper items (including 4 immunization records in Japanese). Of the five flags, three of them are the familiar "Rising Sun" flag, that we all associate with the Nation of Japan. Interestingly, while this flag has been used since as early as the 13th century, it only became the official flag of the country in 1999. All three of the "Rising Sun" flags have been written on in Japanese characters. Two are unframed measuring 33" x 30" (condition is very good; some mild yellowing and a few areas of foxing in the corners; the ink remains dark and crisp; one small ink dot in the center of the red disk); the second unframed flag measures 29" x 16" (condition is excellent, looks almost as new). The framed Japanese flag measures 14" x 11" and is framed to an overall size of 15" x 12" (in good condition aside from some minor discoloration of the cloth). The fourth flag is the impressive and imposing flag of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Ships. Differing slightly from the national flag, this one has sixteen rays extending from the sun which is slightly off center. This flag went out of use after WWII but was again reinstated and appears on all naval ships and buildings. This example measures 34" x 19" and is in excellent condition; made of sturdy stock cloth, it is fully intact with only some slight yellowing. The final flag in the group is a 48 star American flag; the 48 star flag existed between 1912 and 1959. So this certainly dates to the proper period of the accompanying Japanese flags. Measuring 50" x 20" in very good condition; some minor staining near the edges and on the white stripes.

Also included in this lot is a small cotton drawstring bag, with Japanese characters lining one side.
