World War II Early Johnson Automatics Model 1941 Semi-Automatic Rifle

This rifle was designed by Melvin Johnson in the late 1930s. It was a serious contender against the M1 Garand rifle. The US Army ended up adopted the M1 Garand but the USMC Parachute and Raider Battalions acquired some as a war expedient model and used them in the early island hopping campaign in the South Pacific. Johnson rifles have some unique features such as a ten round rotary magazine that could be easily loaded at any time with a single round or with stripper clips and an easily removable barrel that allowed for storage in a parachute jump bag. The receiver is marked with five-line patent information and four line maker's markings over the serial number "6626". The barrel is marked "J.A./30-06" on the top of the breech end, the front of the barrel support is marked "30-06/41" with the rear chamber area of the barrel and locking lug/barrel extension both stamped with the number "324E2". The right rear side of the receiver is stamped with the "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." inside an inverted triangle. The right side of the rear sight is stamped "METERS" with "M2" stamped on the left side. Fitted with an oil finished two-piece walnut buttstock and forend with a checkered steel buttplate. The bolt is marked "1354".

Very fine overall. 90% plus of the mixed finishes remain with some high edge and handling wear along with scattered minor scratches and dings. The wood is fine with some scattered minor dings, scratches and a moderate chip absent from the left side. Mechanically excellent.
