Booklet produced by the U.S. War Department’s Military Intelligence Division entitled “Dictionary of German Scientific Terms,” (MID 641), dated December 1, 1945, marked “Restricted” twice on the front cover, 169 pages, 8 x 10.25, containing a meticulous alphabetic collection of German science terms with their English translation and definition. An introductory notice reads, in part: “This dictionary is intended to assist U.S. military personnel and research agencies in interrogating German scientific personnel and in translating German scientific documents. Most of the terms defined are not included in any standard German or German-English dictionary.” In fine condition, with some light dampstaining to front cover and first page. An intriguing postwar document related to America’s salvaging of German researchers, a group that eventually included rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and a hundred of his key V-2 rocket personnel that emigrated to the United States in Operation Paperclip, where their knowledge was leveraged in the development of the Redstone missile.
