A set of the Works of Horace in four volumes, with two 20th century owner's/presentation letters: FRANCIS, PHILIP [trans.]. A Poetical Translation of the Works of Horace: With the Original Text, and Notes Collected from the best Latin and French commentators on that Author. In Four Volumes. London: Printed for Millar, 1747. Second Edition. 16mo (6 5/8" x 4 1/8"). Full mottled calf, gilt borders and spines, black gilt labels. Fair; Vol. I cover is fully detached; the others have split outer hinges with covers on their way to detaching; all have considerable wear to spines, extremeties, corners; foxing and toning. Labels missing from Vol. III spine. Volume III comes with two loose/inserted 20th-century handwritten letters. One is on the letterhead of the Livermore Sanitarium, with offices in San Francisco. It is from the Director, Dr. John W. Robertson, addressed to a Dr. Moffatt, and concerns a gift of books to the recipient (possibly different from the Horace set); no date, c. 1940s. The second is on notepaper with a San Francisco address, dated 1946, concerning a birthday gift, signature unclear.
