Woody Guthrie Handwritten Lyrics
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Woody Guthrie handwritten lyrics on two pages, for a song titled ''Why,'' written while at the Brooklyn State Hospital, but never recorded. Signed ''Woody Guthrie'' three times, with his address and ''May 1956'' added on both pages. Many of the words are indecipherable, clearly showing the effects of Huntington's Disease, as he became increasingly unable to control his muscle movements. Guthrie was first hospitalized at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital from 1956 to 1961, then at Brooklyn State Hospital until 1966, and finally at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center until his death in 1967. Lyrics read in part: ''Why does it hurt all us, so much of here, than it hurts all my, ever here to written it, and also to divorce it?'' Lyrics are written on two pages of lined paper measuring 8'' x 12.5'', each with small chips and tears along left margins, and a corner missing on the bottom right of first page. Archivally reinforced on verso. Overall very good with large signature in blue ink. A fine testament to one of Folk music's greatest.
