TLS as president, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, September 30, 1914. Letter to Senator John W. Kern. In part: “I am genuinely surprised that any question should have arisen as to whether I want Senator Shively returned. I do most decidedly wish it. I have admired Senator Shively’s steadfast devotion to duty and to the standards of the party and his unfaltering loyalty in all matters of public policy…It would in my judgement be a very great loss to the party and to the Senate if he should not be reelected…May I not add a word of cordial appreciation of the whole Indiana delegation in Congress? The members of the House have stood by the administration with unfaltering generosity and spirit and have made me feel a very deep interest in the political fortune of every one of them.” In very good condition, with overall feathering to signature, running of ink to type resulting in a fuzzy appearance, and scattered light toning and soiling.
