Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 16 x 20, September 4, 1916. President Wilson appoints Joseph E. Carberry as “First Lieutenant of Infantry in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Wilson and countersigned by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. Blue War Office seal affixed to lower left remains intact with tiny tears to a few of the points. In very good condition, with overall foxing and soiling, and Baker’s signature faded but visible. Carberry was a groundbreaking aviator who set several Army altitude records and served under Pershing during WWI.
