TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8, White House letterhead, April 23, 1916. Wilson writes to Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. In full: “Thank you for your letter of yesterday with General [Enoch] Crowder’s figures. I hope that you will argue before the Senate and House conferees in favor of making the draft depend upon the available members of men in Class 1. I have debated this matter with various persons, including some members of the House Committee, and am entirely convinced that you and General Crowder are quite right in regard to it.” In very good condition, with two filing holes at the bottom, area of thin paper at the top of the page, several areas of old tape and tape residue, and an even rectangular block of toning over his signature. Making up for these flaws is the exceptional content as Wilson prepares the nation for its involvement in World War I.
