Woodrow Wilson, History of the American People
Woodrow Wilson, History of the American People with Signed Card (New York: Wm. H. Wise and Co., 1931) Five volumes, 350, 330, 292, 312, and 339 pages, illustrated, brown-leather bindings with gold lettering and decorations, 8vo (9” x 6”). The only U.S. President to earn a research PhD, Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) wrote this mammoth multi-volume history prior to being appointed President of Princeton University in 1902. His attempt to explain the “natural outgrowth” of the Ku Klux Klan in the book was seized upon by director D.W. Griffith, who repeatedly quotes Wilson in his infamous paean to the Klan, The Birth of a Nation (1915), the first film to be shown at the White House. Volume I includes one of Wilson’s White House cards, signed “Woodrow Wilson”, attached to the front endpaper with mylar corners. This edition of the book, published in 1931, is in good condition with wear along the spines and edges of the covers; the autograph is very good.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
