Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), President, Typed Let Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), President, Typed Letter
Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), President, Typed Letter Signed as Governor of New Jersey, "Woodrow Wilson", one page, 8" x 9.75", Trenton, October 15, 1912 to George S. Johns of St. Louis. Written during his first run for President, Wilson pens: "I want to thank you sincerely for the two very interesting letters that arrived at Trenton in my absence. What you say with reference to the necessity for more publicity is very timely, and I will take the matter up at once with New York headquarters. It is fine to have the support of such loyal friends as yourself." Wilson was in a tight race with both William H. Taft (the Republican) and a rebellious third-party candidate in Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive) running against him. Interestingly, the day before Wilson wrote this letter, Roosevelt was the subject of a failed assassination attempt in Milwaukee while delivering a speech. Showing his usual fortitude, the Bull Moose refused medical treatment and gave his scheduled address with a bullet lodged in his rib. However Roosevelt cancelled the balance of his speaking tour. In a gesture of appropriate concern, both Taft and Wilson suspended their campaign activities until T.R. recovered. Despite these complications, Wilson won the election of 1912, though not with a majority of the popular vote. Light folds, one only slightly affecting end of signature, else fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
