This is an early Woodlands Native American Indian spike tomahawk most likely from the Iroquois or Huron tribes. The exceptional piece dates to the late 18th century to early 19th century and is truly one of the earlier weapons available at this sale. The piece shows an ash wood haft decorated with stipple-engraved copper bands secured with tiny brass nails. The forge iron head is artfully designed showing the period correct style blade and extremely unique spontoon spike like back, making this a very potent edged weapon. The spike back shows two edges. The piece was purchased from a New York Native American antique estate. Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned collector and foremost expert on war clubs and tomahawks, Mark Francis. The Francis collection piece has been authenticated and is truly a museum quality important piece. Measures 21.5"L x 8.75"W with a 2.5'L blade end. The piece has excellent rocker engraved original copper/brass/ inlaid wraps. End is slightly split. Exceptional authentic piece.
