These type of wooden gaus with pressed clay figures are rather
unique on the international market, but embody the nomadic
nature of Mongolian Buddhist well, and are most popular there.
The figure is that of the Gonkar wealth deity, which holds both
wish fulfilling jewels and a tray of gems. The photographs
include images of Geshe Wangyal, Bakula Rinpoche and
Zanabazar's Green Tara.

Geshe Wangyal was famous in the States as founding his
Labsum Shedrub Ling Monastery, among the transplanted
Kalmyk population. He received many students of Western
background including Bob Thurman and he made many other
great contributions to Buddhism in America. Of course, Geshe
Wangyal is also known for his financial support of the Tibetan
monasteries in India, as well.

Bakula Rinpoche (this image taken near the time of his
passing) was the former Ambassador of India in Mongolia and
his work to rebuild Mongolian Monasteries is well known and
remains highly regarded in the west.

These images plus the many other auspicious items in this
19 century gau should offer rich reflection and make for a fine
addition to one's meditation room.
