*Note: A painter of realistic landscapes, reflecting a vanishing wilderness in America, he is reportedly one of the most mass-produced artists in the United States. His painting became so popular he was unable to meet all of the demands, and many of his works were reproduced in lithographs and mass distributed as prints, place mats, and wall murals by companies including Sears, Roebuck.
He was born in Kent on the south coast of England near Dover, the son of W. J. Wood, a famous home and church painter who recognized and supported his son's talent. In fact, he forced his son to paint by keeping him inside to paint rather than playing with his friends.
As a youth, he came to the US in 1911, and never returned to England. He traveled extensively all over the US, especially in the West, often in freight cars, and also painted in Mexico and Canada. In the late 1920's and early 1930's he lived and painted in San Antonio, Texas, where he exhibited in the 1928 "Texas Wildflower Competition."
He then went to Carmel, California, and began painting desert and mountain landscapes, and marine scenes, where a dealer bought all his work, which secured his reputation. Later he lived in Laguna Beach where he became a leading figure in the art colony. He and his wife later built a home and studio in the High Sierra and lived there until his death in 1970.
