WONDERFUL ANNIE OAKLEY WILD WEST SHOW DUSTER CIRCA.1900-1922 - Phoebe "Annie Oakley" Moses is believed to be probably the greatest shooting star the world has ever known. She joined the Wild West show circuit with her manager Frank Butler, in the spring of 1885, and left it in 1922. During most of this era, she was associated with Buffalo Bill Cody and Gordon Lillie "Pawnee Bill" (Cody's latter-day partner). Her association with Cody lasted until 1912, during which time she toured the U.S., Canada, England, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. After he retired, she continued on the tour another 10 years. This is a loose fitting duster made from light brown twilled cotton, to be worn as protection from dirt and dust over better clothing or costumes. It is an over-dress or smock with 3/4 length sleeves, and simple vent in front, at the neck. Ends of the arms are trimmed with 2" long, inexpensive gold bullion fringe. Shoulder seams have the same, as does the bottom hem. Neck opening and vent edged with 1/2" wide, inexpensive bullion tape which also rings the bottom of the duster, 4 1/2" above the fringe. Single pocket on front, right, edged with bullion fringe with two silver colored, round bells. Inside of the bottom hem, not seen from the outside, are several brass Indian trade bells, sewn around the entire circumference, a few missing. This provided a soft "tinkle" when she walked. On the back, in letters 3 1/2" high, in two lines, is her name "ANNIE/OAKLEY". These are done in muted red wool, edged with inexpensive 1/4" wide gold bullion tape. The garment possesses great character and display value. Its style and materials are exactly what Oakley would have worn during that period (1900-1922).

Condition: Garment is very good, showing use, subtle soiling and patina of age. Bullion is tarnished darker. Some minor moth holes in the lettering. The garment was carefully examined under dual spectrum ultra-violet light, which confirmed the absence of any modern materials or thread.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
